With a propensity for violence that would make Tarantino blush, a penchant for outrageous spectacle over systemic depth and an affinity for crass humour mixed with innocent slapstick, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is almost a parody of itself, displaying a near postmodern self-awareness of the low brow tendencies on which its appeal is predicated

Dualshockers' Tony Polanco writes:
"Now, dont get me wrong, I like cyborgs, ninjas, over the top action, gore, and girls with short skirts and big boobs. Im a red-blooded male, how could I not? However, its all about presentation and balance and this game doesnt handle those very well. Ill be the first person to admit that Im not the most mature guy out there, but when Im playing a game and Im saying to myself Was this written by a 15 year old? you KNOW things are bad. It also doesnt help when the actual gameplay doesnt hold up"

When I think of Ninja Gaiden I think of flow. Difficulty, too, of course but I recall a combat system that rewards timing, precision and reactionary movements to deal with the current enemy mix on screen. Ninja Gaiden, to me at least, is a series about owning a battle through smarts and reactions. Although, obviously, Yaiba isnt a typical Ninja Gaiden (which is obvious from a mere glance), it does carry the moniker in subtitle, and so one would expect many tenets of the series to remain.

The once proud Ninja Gaiden falters again with unbalanced zombie hack-n-slash spin-off Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z. Spoiler alert: the Z stands for "zombies."

The first of Tomonobu Itagakis Ninja Gaiden games was defined by its counterattack. Activated by blocking and then pressing an attack button the moment an enemy blow connected, it powered a game that required careful play and insisted you respect your opponent, punishing mistakes severely. In the process, it set a new high bar for its genre. Ninja Gaidens been going downhill ever since, and it says much about how inexorably bound this series is to the law of diminishing returns that its latest entrys defining mechanic asks for no timing, precision or respect for your opponent. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is built on the QTE.
